5 Different Types of Art Paint

Painting is the act of splashing colors with the help of a brush in a certain way. You can paint on any surface. Painting can also be done digitally [on PCs] or manually [using paints and brushes, such as the Texas flag painting]. Painting is generally all about creativity, so artists don’t usually restrict themselves to specific mediums and materials. 

There are various types of painting materials, such as paper, clay, sand, etc. There are also different painting styles available. However, the most popular technique is the modern style of painting since it allows artists to unleash their ideas of the canvas.

• Oil painting

Oil-based paints are very durable and offer a shiny appearance. They are also suitable for almost all kinds of styles. You get to work with smooth paint texture, and it also has an amazing scent. Additionally, oil-based paints blend well with others. This paint dries slowly, which works to the painter’s advantage. 

The common drying oils used as a binder include linseed oil, walnut oil, poppy seed oil, etc. And don’t forget about water mixable oil paints. Water mixable oil paint is oil paint with an added emulsifier. 

• Watercolor painting

This painting technique is usually done on paper. Watercolor is a translucent paint that contains pigment and a binder. In watercolor painting, the painter usually uses water-based solutions to mix the colors, thus the name watercolor painting. Watercolor painting involves a lot of tough tasks just like an oil painting. The mixing of color is critical since too much of it can change the shade of the colors. 

• Gouache painting

Although gouache painting is almost similar to watercolor due to the fact that it can be re-wetted, this type of paint dries darker, and it is also a heavier paint due to the chalk that is integrated into it.  Gouache is an opaque paint, making it possess similar characteristics as acrylic. Because it is water-soluble, it requires a varnish over to the top to help in sealing the finished painting. 

• Acrylic painting

There are a wide variety of acrylic paints, depending on their texture and drying time. This type of paint dries faster, is cost-effective, and non-toxic. This water-soluble paint also holds up better than oil paint, since it is not prone to yellowing or cracking. The acrylic paint can be applied to almost any stable surface, such as watercolor paper or canvas. It can be purchased in different forms, such as a tube or ink-bottle, in varying viscosity. 

• Encaustic painting

The encaustic is a wax-based paint that has a strong color pigment. This versatile paint choice has no solvents added. It is also impervious to moisture. If you are looking for a highly-durable paint, then encaustic paint should be on your priority list because it is very durable. For molding, sculptures, and facial features, many artists use the acrylic paint.
