Congratulations! Assuming you are reading this article because you’ve introduced a new pup into your family. Now that you’ve brought your new furry friend home, you may be wondering, “What are the best commands to teach my dog?” Teaching your pup basic training commands can be beneficial when tackling behavior issues regardless of existing ones or something that may develop in the future.

So, where is a good place to start with teaching your pup commands? Although taking a training class may be beneficial for both you and your dog, there are effective training commands you can teach your dog from home. Below we have listed some of the best dog commands to teach and train your new pup and some tips to help out with training.

    Come

A vital word for your pup to know is the command “come.” This command is very useful anytime you lost grip on your pup’s leash or if the front door or gate was left open. To make learning this command easier, try teaching it with a leash on. Say the command “come,” and gently pull the leash toward you. Once they come to you, reward them with a treat and affection.

    Sit

Sit is one of the most simple dog commands you can teach your pup, so if you are struggling with training on other commands, it can be a great place to start or come to. The great thing about this command is that it makes it much easier to calm and control your dog. Sit can also prep your pup for harder command training like “come” and “stay.” To simplify the training for this command, hold a treat near your dog’s nose. Proceed to move your hand up, allowing their head to follow and causing their bottom to lower. Once they are in the sitting position, say the command “sit,” followed by affection and giving them the treat.

    Stay

Just as with the “sit” command, “stay” is another cue to assist in making your pup easier to control. This command is useful in numerous situations, including when you don’t want your dog overwhelming guests. Before training your pup on this command, you want to ensure the “sit” command is mastered. For this training, start by asking your pup to sit, then open your palm and say the command “stay.” Proceed to take steps back and then reward your pup with a treat and affection. Regardless of how long your pup stays, always reward them to encourage the good behavior.

Training your dog is a process and will take time with any of these commands. Remember that you are asking a lot of your dog, so if they’re struggling, be understanding, patient, and don’t be afraid to go back to previous commands and perfect those before moving on to newer, more complex commands. If you are looking for a training class in Milwaukee, then check out Aldens Kennels. They’ve got both highly rated group and private training classes.

Alden’s Kennels is Illinois’ premier boarding and training facility for dogs! Servicing the pups of the midwest region including Wisconin, Alden’s Kennels is the place to go for high-quality dog training.
