Are you looking for work in SLC? Luckily, with the economy on the rebound, jobs are out there, but they won’t just fall into your lap. You need to know what to do and where to look. Here are five tips for finding the job you’re seeking:

Firstly, make sure your resume is up to date. This is the first thing employers will look at, and it needs to leave a good impression. Be sure your resume is one page, easy to read, lists your most recent work experience and most valuable skills. Take the time to delete any less relevant things you may have on there, like your teenage pet-sitting job. Your prospective employer will thank you.

Especially if your resume is looking a little bare, look for useful job skills that could give you an edge, like proficiency in a particular software, a new coding language, or perhaps photo editing. Check places like Skillshare or youtube for free tutorials. Your new skill could be what sets you apart from the crowd.

Once your resume is polished and filled with the things employers are looking for, it’s time to start looking for work. Make accounts on sites like indeed.com, ziprecruiter.com, and monster.com. Start applying for jobs and check back daily to apply for more. If you don’t find what you are looking for after a while, consider broadening your search. Stretch yourself to apply for jobs that may not exactly be what you had envisioned but could be exactly what you need.

Fourth, start working with an SLC-based employment agency. They will help you find jobs with local companies that may not use these larger job sites. Plenty of smaller employers prefer to hire through local agencies.

Finally, write down all SLC companies that you would like to work for. Make it a running list and keep adding to it as you go. Then make it a weekly goal to go down the list and check each company’s website for new job postings to apply for. If you’re up for a little extra work, you can even reach out to the hiring manager of each and inquire about any job openings. You may just be able to snag one that might have otherwise been an inside hire.

Remember, persistence is key. You may not find work tomorrow, but you will eventually find it if you keep up your search. There is an SLC employer out there looking for someone just like you.

Synergy Staffing is an employment service that helps their clients find work in SLC.
