    Ventilation and Insulation

Ventilation and insulation are some of the most crucial components of roof protection during the winter. Ventilation guards against moisture buildup, preventing mold and interior damage. Insulation regulates internal home temperatures and keeps the attic’s temperature in sync with the temperature outside, ultimately preventing condensation which can cause roof damage. An improperly insulated roof could cause ice deposits, or ice dams, on the edge of the roof, resulting in backed-up melted snow that could potentially seep through cracks in the roof’s exterior.

    Roof Rakes

During the winter, roofs, especially flat roofs, are at risk of collapsing beneath the pressure of snow buildup. Roof rakes are a simple and efficient way to clear snow and ice from a roof, and they prevent ice dam formation as well as water damage. Roof rakes are a safer alternative to snow-melting chemicals because they are less likely to cause damage to shingles and roof flashing. Most roof rakes have telescopic handles, allowing for the user to leave a thin layer of snow on the roof to prevent shingle scratching. However, roof rakes can only clear so much snow, and the clearing process can be dangerous if ice dams have already formed. Consider consulting professionals at TRA Snow and Sun for excessive snow removal.

    Inspections

Some forms of roof damage are not visible to the untrained eye, or cannot be fixed without the help of a professional. Roof inspectors can examine gutters, chimneys, and the roof itself for signs of damage or potential damage. The freeze-thaw cycle that occurs in the winter may cause cracks to form on the roof, but professional contractors can help foresee or remedy this occurrence. If you’re fairly certain that your roof isn’t at risk for damage, consider performing a brief inspection of the gutters and draining avenues to prevent snow and ice buildup as the winter weather reaches its peak.

    Gutter Clearing

As the heat from a home’s interior radiates onto its roof, the snow begins to melt, running into gutters and drainage systems, where it then refreezes, resulting in gutter damage or even complete collapse! Regularly inspect and clear your roof’s gutters, and consider installing heat tape to prevent the buildup of icicles and dams. Preparation for roof protection in the winter should begin in late fall, before the first snow. Clear out any leaves or debris that may have accumulated in gutters and downspouts during the season to increase gutter flow and prevent roof damage.

TRA Snow and Sun is a roof accessory system company that offers snow guards for metal roofs, solar tile mounting, and roof ventilation and flashing for metal, commercial, and residential roofs.
