Crawling Insects – Some Information for You

Most of the insects have wings and they fly around easily, especially when they reach their adult stage. Some insects like cockroach crawl even though they have wings. Ants and termites produce “reproductives”, otherwise known as their offspring, and these might have temporary wings. Flea and louse are some of the insects that are wingless, and hence can just jump around or crawl.

Crawling Insects

Here are some of the kinds of insects that are known as crawlers.

  • Ants

Though ants can bite and sting, they are more of an irritant than a problem. The sting of ants consists of chemicals called alkaloids, formic acid, and piperidines. Ants invade buildings, homes and gardens for food and to construct their home. They don’t transmit any disease. Only a few of the species of ants are considered pests.

  • Bed bugs

These insects feed on blood. They produce a bump that is itchy on the skin. They build colonies in furniture and bedrooms, which have not been used in a long time. It includes carpets, bed frames, drawers, underlay, and cupboards. Bed bugs can easily enter your clothing or luggage, when you are in a hotel room. However, they do not transmit any diseases.

  • Cockroaches

These crawlers carry disease-causing organisms that can easily contaminate surfaces and food. They also carry particles that can cause asthma. Cockroaches are considered the most dangerous pests in the food processing industries, homes, healthcare facilities and restaurants.

  • Fleas

Fleas enter the human body through wild animals and pets including mice, rabbits, foxes, dogs, birds, cats, and rats. There are a variety of species of fleas. Fleas transmit bacterial diseases like plague and murine typhus.

  • Lice

Human louse is of three types, crab louse, body louse, and head louse. Head lice pass from one person’s hair to another. Body lice pass when one person comes in close contact with the other. It spreads through bedding and clothing. They cause distress and itching.

Both the lice types can cause diseases such as endemic/murine typhus, epidemic typhus and relapsing fever. The crab louse spreads by very close contact. It is found in eyelashes and pubic hair.

  • Processionary moth

Moths like caterpillars cause defoliation of trees. They are also very dangerous because the long hair of these moths contains an irritating chemical. It causes rashes and allergic reactions. They occur either by touching the caterpillar or by their hair in the wind.

  • Stored Product Insects

When food is transferred from field to customer, a wide range of species of insects infests food. They cause economic losses to businesses and farmers by reducing the number of goods. They also affect the quality of the goods causing damage to reputation. Beetles, mites and weevils are some of the crawling insects which damage the affected food.

Be extra careful when it comes to the matter of pests. You have to control them by taking the necessary actions.
