Many people have heard of accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance; however, those some people might be confused about what this insurance policy is and what is covers.

Essentially, this insurance policy will pay out if the policyholder dies or sustains serious injuries in an accident, such as a motor vehicle collision.

Because this insurance policy does overlap with other insurance policies such as life insurance and disability insurance, it is easy to see how people might be confused.

It is important for everyone to understand the differences among these policies so that they can be protected appropriately.

An Overview of Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance

Like other insurance policies, AD&D insurance will have a face value to it; however, the policy doesn’t pay the full amount for each area of coverage. Some of the important points to remember:

    • The policy will pay the full amount in the event of an accidental death
    • The policy will pay a percentage of the full amount in the event of a serious injury.
    • The percentage it will pay out depends on the severity of the injury.
    • The more severe the injury, the higher the percentage.
    • It is possible that the policy may pay more than the face amount if the individual dies in an accident involving a vehicle in which a fare was involved

There is a limit to the value of the policy. Typically, it is quantified as a multiple of that individual’s annual salary.

What Does AD&D Insurance Not Cover?

There are several areas where accidental death and dismemberment insurance will not provide any coverage at all. This includes any death due to a health concern, such as a heart attack.

Other areas where this policy will not pay include war, suicide, drug overdoses, surgery complications, and drunk driving. Keep this in mind when shopping for AD&D insurance.
