Raja Ampat isn’t any longer a key paradise. It’s a world-famous paradise now. It is so great that any diver on earth would surely put this place in their bucket listing to visit. Raja Ampat is the title of archipelago regency in the northwest of Papua Island. There are over 1500 islands within this regency, and the four chief islands are Waigeo, Misool, Salawati, and Batanta.

Raja Ampat signifies four kings, inspired from a local legend. Based on a local legend, there was a woman who found seven eggs, and four hatched kings who then ruled the main islands. The other three became a girl, a phantom, and a rock.

To summarize it only, Raja Ampat is your ultimate spot. Within its 9.8 million acres territory, this region is the home of 1000 species of coral reefs, 700 types of mollusk, and 540 kinds of coral. It is estimated 75% of world species reside here. The pristine and diverse marine life have put this region on the map of the world’s best tourist destinations.

    Amazing diving spots

Many Raja Ampat visitors come for the best diving experience. This place delivers and gives them even more. There are so many diving areas in the region, all with their distinct features. Diving areas in Misool Island is usually an explosion of colors, with mesmerizing corals and more giant creatures.

In Waigeo, the diving sites provide more fish species, such as angelfish, lionfish, and clownfish between anemones. Should you dive into Mansuar, then you’ll most likely be greeted by mantas and turtles. For much bigger fish, you can dive at Cenderawasih Bay, where you can meet the gentle giants, whale sharks.

    Snorkeling among the small islands

One of the most unique traits of Raja Ampat is its little cone-shaped karst islands. Raja Ampat is scattered in one of the shallow waters; these islands generate a spectacularly picturesque panorama. Raja Ampat is a great area for visitors to snorkel and admire the beauty underwater with crystal clear waters.

With high visibility, you will see how shallow waters are bustling with the unrivaled marine lifestyle. Anywhere with surface water is ideal for snorkeling in Raja Ampat. Still, Wayag Island and Pianemo take the cake because of their vistas.

    An Emerging and Vanishing Beach

Pasir Timbul signifies emerging deserts, is the name of the shoal at the north of Mansuar Island. There is a spectacular daily wonder happening here, as a few white sand bars emerge from the sea at the low tide and submerge throughout the high tide.

These sand bars are as fantastic as they could be, like beaches in the center of the ocean. The sole drawback is that you can not readily reach this spot. On the flip side, that makes this shoal empty most days so that you can enjoy it at its fullest.

    Vantage points of this archipelago

Presented with memorable scenes, sometimes you feel the need to have a better perspective to enjoy things more fully. That’s where this vantage spots in Raja Ampat comes in handy. When you arrive at Pianemo by boat, you might wonder what these tiny islands look like from above. Spoiler alert; it’s royal! You will see that by hiking a bit to see the total panorama of the islands. Wayag Island also has comparable vantage points, as well as Harfat Jaya Peak in Misool Island.

    Beautiful people, incredible landscape

Raja Ampat isn’t just about marine life. The landscape and those who live on these islands are amazing too. There are tons of villages with friendly people like Arborek and Sawinggrai village. Nature’s gift to these islands will not stop at sea, since the woods here are still home to several amazing creatures like Waigeo Cuscus and Bird of Paradise (Cendrawasih). You may even get a bird watching experience.

The Way to Get There and Things to do in Raja Ampat

Marinda Airport at Waisai is the only airstrip in the regency. It is only served by small plane flights out of Sorong’s Domine Eduard Osok Airport. Sorong is linked to Singapore, Jakarta, and also Makassar. You can hop on a ferry from Sorong to Waisai too.

Getting around Raja Ampat is somewhat problematic due to the nature of this regency. You probably need to charter a boat or carry a package trip to go from one island to another. The handiest way to enjoy Raja Ampat is by hopping to a liveaboard ship.
