    Types of Satay: Indonesian Delicious Signature Dish

     Satay or sate is a signature Indonesian dish that is worth a thumbs up when it comes to taste. Almost all Indonesian like to eat satay because it is very delicious. But foreign tourists, of course, will wonder about what is a satay and how it tastes.

    Indonesia has many types of satay and their different characteristics of each region. It is said that satay was first made in the 19th century by the people of Java Island, then became a popular food in Indonesia.

    Getting to Know the Types of Indonesian Satay

    Some of the types were brought by the immigrants from the Middle East region to Indonesia. In ancient times, lamb and mutton were the most popular ingredients for making satay. Here are several types of Indonesian satay.

    1. Scallop Satay

    Who likes to eat satay but has never tried scallop satay? This scallop satay is a signature dish from Medan, North Sumatra. Scallop satay is not grilled like other types of satay but uses special spices, and the shells are boiled so that the meat is tender.

    1. Maranggi Satay

    Another type of satay that is no less delicious is maranggi satay. Maranggi satay uses two main ingredients, brown sugar and coriander. The ingredient used is beef. This food is a signature dish from Purwakarta.

    If you want to taste maranggi satay, add sticky grilled rice and chili oncom. Combining these with maranggi satay will increase your appetite and even make you addicted.

    1. Lilit Satay Bali

    Bali is not only known for its tourist islands but also for its unique culinary offerings, one of which is lilit satay. Lilit satay is made of chicken or fish and is processed with meat mashed into spices.

    This satay does not use ordinary skewers but lemongrass stalks which makes the aroma of the food more distinctive. If you visit Bali, don’t forget to try this dish!

    Satay Recipe

    After knowing the three types of satay in Indonesia, the next step is knowing how to make satay. You must prepare some ingredients, including satay ingredients, peanut sauce ingredients, and complements.

    1. Satay Ingredients
    • Four fileted chicken thighs
    • Sweet soy sauce 5 tbsp
    • Cooking oil 1 tbsp
    • 22 skewers
    1. Peanut Sauce Ingredients
    • Roasted and mashed peanut 200 grams
    • 3 pieces of fried red chili
    • Fried pecan 4 pieces
    • 2 large red chilies
    • Comb brown sugar with 3 tbsp
    • Salt 1 tbsp
    • 500 ml hot water
    1. Complementary Materials
    • Lontong (rice cake) 4 pieces
    • Sweet soy sauce 2 tbsp
    • 3 limes
    • Shallots for sprinkling 2 tbsp
    • Boiled cayenne pepper 15 seeds
    • 4 pieces of red chili
    • Salt 1 teaspoon
