Foundries are skilled in handling a wide range of metals, each requiring different processes and expertise. If you have ever wondered what is foundry and how it manages various metals, it is important to know that foundries employ specialized techniques to handle and process metals like iron, aluminum, copper, and steel. These methods ensure that each metal is treated appropriately to produce high-quality, durable products.

Find below five ways foundries handle different metals.

Different furnaces for melting different metals

Foundries use different furnaces for melting various metals. For example, iron is melted in a blast furnace, while aluminum is typically melted in an electric arc furnace. The type of furnace used depends on the metal’s melting point and the volume of production needed.

    Carefully control the alloying process

To achieve specific properties, different metals are mixed with other elements. For example, adding carbon to iron creates steel, which is stronger and more durable. This precise alloying process is crucial in producing metals with the desired characteristics.

    Implements specialized casting techniques

Foundries implement specialized casting techniques based on the metal. For instance, aluminum is often die-cast, which is suitable for producing lightweight and complex parts, while cast iron is usually sand-cast, which is ideal for larger, heavier components.

Temperature control is vital in foundries

Each metal has a specific melting and pouring temperature. Foundries must carefully monitor and control these temperatures to ensure the metal flows correctly into molds and solidifies without defects.

Finishing processes vary depending on the metal

After casting, metals like steel may undergo heat treatment to enhance hardness, while aluminum might be anodized to improve corrosion resistance. These finishing steps are tailored to the specific metal to ensure the final product meets quality standards.

    Final words

Foundries handle different metals with a variety of specialized techniques, from melting and alloying to casting and finishing, ensuring that each metal is processed to achieve the highest quality.
