TMJ and craniofacial issues impact millions of Americans. TMJ is a temporomandibular joint abbreviation. The joint binds the lower jawbone to the cranium and enables unrestricted movement of the lower jawbone. The TMJs and the human body’s jaw are essentially a lever system with a complex structural structure.

Unfortunately, the architecture of this system is not optimal, and it is often inefficient and prone to malfunctions. It is part of the broader category of treating Craniofacial Pain disorders, which encompasses not just the jaw but also the bigger head and neck structures and the shoulder, shoulder blade, and back structures that are neurologically related to the jaw but may manifest as facial pain.

What are the symptoms of TMJ?

    • Headaches and migraines that last a long time
    • Ear pain and ringing are experienced.
    • Vertigo is a condition in which the sense of balance is disrupted
    • Facial muscles that be sore or uncomfortable
    • Neck, shoulder, and back pain and stiffness are common complaints.

What is the cause of TMJ?

The presence or absence of a variety of variables may cause or contribute to TMJ problems. The following are examples of skeletal malformation caused by trauma: any hit to the head or chin, whiplash injury, lousy posture, abnormal biting, arthritis, and genetic growth and development variables that lead to skeletal malformation.

TMJ problems are exacerbated by stress, whether at work or home. Muscle tension and spasm occur as a result of the disc being displaced. Early symptoms of TMJ dysfunction are often characterised by clicking or popping sounds. More severe displacements may be very painful. If the problem is not addressed, it may have long-term consequences.

    Therapy of oral appliances: –

This treatment, also known as splint therapy, is the most straightforward method of alleviating most TMJ symptoms. However, it does not necessarily address structural dental problems that may be contributing to the disease. To relieve pain, oral appliances must first take pressure off the muscles that surround the joint and then enable them to relax.

    Final Words: –

Treatment from Los Gatos TMJ Dentist may include making orthotics to replace the jaws and muscles to decrease clenching/grinding properly; physical therapy including Cold Laser, ultrasound, TENS, injection trigger points; prolotherapy, chronic pain nutrition; and screening for sleep breathing disorders (SBDs) that may cause sleep bruxism.
