A babydoll is a type of sleepwear for women which often falls into the lingerie category. It is a short, sleeveless dress intended for nightwear and often has a bralette type top which flows down to form a loose dress which usually ends at mid-thigh or higher. It typically has spaghetti straps or is strapless but more recently, this garment has evolved even further to broaden its styles and to appeal to even more people with other changes in neckline such as halter necks or even cap sleeves. It is one of the few types of lingerie and sleepwear which is not only sexy, but also extremely comfortable and practical to sleep in. It initially started as a post-war sleepwear in 1942 by lingerie designer, Sylvia Pedlar due to the shortage of material available and has eventually turned to an erotic piece of clothing. Sylvia, however, did not use the term ‘babydoll’ for this piece of clothing and the name was instead popularised by the 1956 movie, ‘Baby Doll’.

These were a really popular piece of nightwear in the 50s, and several western shoots were done wearing babydolls. It was all the rage from the 50s to the 80s where pretty much everybody owned one. The trend of babydolls faded from the 90s to the late 2000s, after which it, similar to other trends in the fashion world, has made a comeback. In a more contemporary style, recently, following the trend of nightwear as daywear, people have also started wearing this garment out, often paired with ripped jeans. Other, more risqué styles of wearing this garment are as a costume, mostly for dress-up occasions such as Halloween and costume parties.
