The emerging area of research is on the benefits of nattokinase supplementation for cardiovascular wellness. As a protease enzyme, nattokinase possesses potent fibrinolytic activity, meaning it dissolves fibrin, a key protein found in blood clots. It may prevent blood thickening and improve circulation. Science confirms the ability of nattokinase to break down blood clots and enhance blood flow in over 20 human clinical trials.

Research on nattokinase and heart health

    • Blood pressure – Several studies reveal supplemental nattokinase may reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure in subjects with hypertension. Researchers believe these effects result from decreased blood viscosity and enhanced circulation.
    • Blood flow – Multiple human trials show improved blood flow associated with nattokinase supplementation. In one study, patients saw a 12% enhancement in flow-mediated dilation, a measure of arterial health and circulation.
    • Blood clots – As its central mechanism of action, nattokinase has proven effective in breaking down blood clots. However, studies show nattokinase lacks side effects like gastrointestinal bleeding seen with aspirin long-term.
    • Cholesterol – Added nattokinase may also benefit cholesterol levels. A 2-month trial showed subjects had an average 10.3% decrease in total cholesterol and a 13% drop in LDL or “bad” cholesterol. Triglycerides also declined significantly.
    • Atherosclerosis – Several animal studies reveal nattokinase supplementation reduces atherosclerotic lesions. Human data also demonstrates its ability to prevent atherosclerosis progression compared to control groups.

These research findings demonstrate clear benefits for cardiovascular function and circulation. Scientists believe the unique fibrinolytic activity of nattokinase sets it apart from other oral proteases and enzymes. Unlike general protease supplements, nattokinase specifically targets fibrin bound within blood vessel walls and blood clots. This specificity and precision likely underlie its safety and efficacy for heart health.

    Future directions for research

While current data is encouraging, there remain gaps in our scientific understanding of nattokinase for future research efforts to address, including.

    • Standardized dosing – Clinical trials use a wide dosing range, from 100 to 6,000 fibrin degradation units (FU). Establishing an optimal dose would better guide medical use and supplement labeling.
    • Combination therapy – Pairing nattokinase with other heart supplements like coenzyme Q10 or omega-3 fish oil may enhance benefits. These potential synergies require exploration.
    • Mechanistic insight – We need further investigation into the mechanisms behind nattokinase’s effects on atherosclerosis, blood flow, thrombosis, blood pressure, and lipid metabolism at the molecular level.
    • Long-term trials – Nearly all studies completed have lasted 1 to 3 months. Longer-duration, large-scale controlled trials would provide key data on efficacy and safety with consistent daily nattokinase use over the years.

While more research is still needed, current findings about nattokinase are extremely promising as an all-natural method to promote heart wellness. Consumers already report success using nattokinase supplement safely to lower blood pressure, “thin” the blood, and maintain healthy circulation. With heart health innovations like nattokinase advancing, the future looks bright in the fight against cardiovascular disease through natural, well-researched alternatives. As emerging research accumulates with continued rigorous study, nattokinase as a daily supplement may soon become a physician-recommended standard of care.
