No matter how you look at it, moving to a new home or city is a big project.  While you try to manage the logistics of everything, it can be easy to overlook the feelings, perceptions, and attitudes of everyone in your family, including children.  To have a successful move with your entire family, practice these few easy tips.

    Discuss the Move

It is important to include your children in the moving process by talking with them, not necessarily at them.  Depending on your child’s age, you can involve him or her in various aspects of the moving process.

If kids are old enough, let them be a part of the decision-making process.  For younger children, include them on a walk around the new neighborhood.  The more comfortable all family members are with the move, the more success you will have.

    Consider Age

Age has a great deal to do with how much your child can handle when it comes to moving day.  For very young children and toddlers, keep moving logistics simple.  Stories and pictures can be helpful to explain what is happening with all the changes.

For school age children, consider the impact of a new school district with a new curriculum, teachers, and friends.  If possible, arrange a meeting with the school to familiarize both yourself and your kids with teachers and administrators.

For teenagers, remember that rebellion is normal, and part of the process.  It is hard to uproot an already established teenager.  It is important to not discount their concerns but work through them together.

If your child is in his or her senior year, consider all options to allow your child to stay with a relative in order to graduate from his or her current high school.

    Utilize Mini Storage

Moving is a big job that takes months of planning.  Sometimes though, you simply don’t have a place for everything, and that’s alright.  Utilize mini storage options to find a place for your belongings.

Mini storage is a great option to house furniture until rooms are painted and flooring finished.  These options are available in a variety of sizes to suit your every need.
